Our system does not teach students how to save money, do taxes, avoid debt, plan for retirement, or the importance of real responsibility. There are no mandatory financial literacy classes that are ultimately essential to every students' future.
Schools were meant to train people to work in factories in the 19th century. Now, while the world around us is constantly changing and modernizing, our school systems have not.
Two-thirds of American adults can’t pass a basic financial literacy test. 44% of Americans don’t have enough cash to cover a $400 emergency. 43% of student loan borrowers are not making payments. 38% of U.S. households have credit card debt. 33% of American adults have $0 saved for retirement.
Thank you for taking your time reading about this important issue. My name is Grace Wang and I am a rising junior at Eleanor Roosevelt High School. I am very passionate about education, specifically, applicable education for children. I truly believe that our country's education system can do better, and can better prepare us for our future, more than our parents ever can. It is up to us to advocate for that change, so join in with our movement, and let's make sure we all get relevant and essential skills from our schools.
